Abbatiale de Lérins
The monastery of Saint-Honorat, founded around 400–410

Honorat of Arles founded the first monastery on the island around 400–410; the chapel of Saint-Sauveur has revealed a fifth-century establishment, among the oldest traces of monks in the West. In the sixth and seventh centuries the abbey gave many bishops to the south and was one of the great sites of European Christendom.
Its present buildings date from the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries and the nineteenth. The monastery is home today to a Cistercian community.
