The Fort Royal stands on Sainte-Marguerite, the largest of the Lérins Islands, in the roads of Cannes; the Man in the Iron Mask is said to have been held here. The city bought the fort in 1996 and opened a museum in it – the Musée de la Mer, renamed in 2020 the Musée du Masque de fer et du Fort Royal – alongside an international youth centre.

The island itself was occupied from at least the fifth century BC; the Romans left cisterns and the remains of a laconicum, a dry sweating-room.

Musée du Masque de fer et du Fort Royal is a museum in The Lérins Islands.
