The counts of Villeneuve built the château on the rocks by the sea in the fourteenth century, facing what is now the port of Mandelieu-la-Napoule. Abandoned and looted in the Revolution, it housed a glassworks from 1837, and a house was built on its ruins between 1878 and 1880.

In November 1918 the American sculptor Henry Clews and Marie Clews, an architect, bought what remained and rebuilt it themselves as a neo-medieval castle, with Henry's fantastic bestiary and mottoes such as Once upon a time; Marie designed the château and its gardens. The La Napoule Art Foundation, founded by Marie Clews in 1951, runs it as a cultural centre, and the gardens are listed among the notable gardens of France.

Château de la Napoule is a castle on Rue de la Plage in Mandelieu-la-Napoule. The station Mandelieu-la-Napoule is 150 m away (about 2 min on foot).
