Prince Honoré II of Monaco wanted it, and the architect Lorenzo Lavagna laid out the church; the first stone was laid on 27 May 1619, it opened for worship in 1653 and was consecrated in 1675. Emmanuel Cantone added the 53-metre bell tower, the campanin, in 1701, and the façade was completed in 1819 in the spirit of seventeenth-century baroque.

Ramps of steps climb from the sea road to the pebbled square; the square has hosted the Menton music festival each August since 1949. It became a minor basilica in 1999 and has been a classé historic monument since 1947.
