Ramparts of Saint-Paul-de-Vence
François I's bastioned enceinte of 1543–47, one of the first in France, intact

François I ordered these walls in 1538 as an answer to the citadel of Nice, after Charles V's troops had taken the town in 1524 and besieged it in 1536. The Provençal military engineer Jean de Renaud, known as Saint-Rémy, built them between 1543 and 1547 – one of the first bastioned fortifications in France – with four bastions guarding the two gates. They have barely changed since; Vauban inspected them in 1700.
