The act of habitation of 3 October 1519 let the land of Valbonne to settlers from the neighbouring hamlets, who had to live in the village. Augustin Grimaldi, bishop of Grasse and abbot of Lérins, gave it a grid plan in the manner of ancient towns and the bastides of the south-west: streets crossing at right angles round a central square lined with arcades, with no hamlets or outlying quarters.

The square and its houses were built in the seventeenth century, and it has been an inscrit historic monument since 12 June 1992.

Place des Arcades is a listed building on Rue Eugene Giraud in Valbonne. The bus stop Valbonne - Hôtel de Ville is 150 m away (about 3 min on foot).
