Picasso began two large compositions, La Guerre and La Paix, in 1952, in the climate of the post-war calls for peace, and in 1954 they were installed in the Romanesque chapel of the château of Vallauris, chosen for the austere proportions of the building. He gave them to the State in 1956, and the museum opened in 1959; days before, he added a fresco of the four parts of the world.

He wished the chapel to stay dim, so that visitors would discover the figures as in a painted cave. The chapel has been a classé historic monument since 1951.
