Citadelle Saint-Elme
One of Europe's first bastioned fortresses, built for Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy

The citadel of Villefranche was built in the sixteenth century and is one of the earliest bastioned fortifications in Europe. It was the heart of the defences that Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy raised round his naval port of the Darse – with the Fort du Mont-Alban, the Saint-Hospice tower on Cap Ferrat and the Beaulieu battery – after the Franco-Ottoman fleet's attack of 1543. Since 2009 it has hosted the Franchement Art fair.
