A castrum is recorded at Grimaud from the eleventh century, on a rocky peak protected to the north by the slopes of the vallon de la Garde; the castle was the centre of the lordship of Le Freinet, roughly today's cantons of Grimaud and Saint-Tropez. In the fourteenth century the village rampart joined the castle walls, and in the mid-seventeenth century the Castellane added the two round towers and an east wing.

Abandoned in the Revolution, it was declared a stone quarry and dismantled. The walls and fortifications have been classé since 27 December 1996, and an open-air theatre in the ruins hosts summer events.

Château de Grimaud is a ruins on Chemin de l'Aire des Fourches in Grimaud. The bus stop Grimaud - Village is 200 m away (about 4 min on foot).
