The building
The chapel of the White Penitents of Saint Bernardine stands on Roman foundations; local historians date it to 1513 or 1581, and its walnut side door carries the date 20 March 1581. Hooded penitents and a head of Lucifer are carved on its front, gilded baroque columns frame the altar, and the frescoes of the apse are of the sixteenth century. After a fire at the end of the 1970s it was restored and reopened in 2008.
Good to know. Rue du Docteur-Rostan, in the old town. Opened for visits and events – see the town’s heritage page.
