The Russian colony of the nineteenth century first built a church in Rue Longchamp in 1859; it was soon too small. Near the chapel that Alexander II had raised in memory of his son, the tsarevich Nicholas, who died in Nice in 1865, work began in 1903 on a cathedral to plans by Mikhail Preobrazhensky of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. It was inaugurated in 1912.

It is one of the most important Russian Orthodox churches outside Russia, a classé historic monument since 11 August 1987, at the end of Avenue Nicolas-II off Boulevard du Tzaréwitch.
