Théoule-sur-Mer

The first town of the Alpes-Maritimes, on the red porphyry of the Esterel

Théoule-sur-Mer is the first commune of the Alpes-Maritimes coming from the Var, on the eastern foothills of the Esterel. Its coast runs some fifteen kilometres from the vallon de Maurevieille to the Pointe du Trayas, a stretch of the Corniche d'Or cut into calanques, coves, beaches and points whose cliffs glow with red porphyry; inland, the Esterel rises to 440 metres at the Grosses Grues.

Around 1630 the lords of Villeneuve had a soap factory built by the sea, today's château. In 1888 the vast Maurevieille estate was divided into lots, bought mostly by families from Lyon who built their winter houses; Abel Ballif, president of the Touring Club de France, was behind the Corniche d'Or road, extended to Cannes in 1905.

Four marinas serve the coast – La Rague, Le Suveret in the village, Port-La Galère and La Figueirette – and offshore the Estérel-Théoule maritime park protects 353 hectares of sea.
