Begun in 1520 by the abbot of Le Thoronet to protect settlers from pirates, the Tour Carrée stands opposite the church; with a battery of cannon and the Tour du Portalet in Saint-Tropez it guarded the gulf. It later served for court hearings and in the 1930s as the town hall.

Listed since 29 August 1977, it now houses the Musée de la Tour Carrée, given to local traditions, costume, crafts and fishing, with temporary exhibitions; the top floor looks over the gulf and the port.

La Tour Carrée is a museum on Place des Aliziers in Sainte-Maxime. The ferry landing Sainte-Maxime is 150 m away (about 3 min on foot).
