The Musée national Marc Chagall was created in the painter's lifetime, with the support of André Malraux, and opened in 1973. Its core is the Biblical Message – seventeen large paintings from Genesis, Exodus and the Song of Songs that Chagall gave to the French State in 1966.

Chagall decided where each work would hang, designed the mosaic over the pond and the blue stained glass of the concert hall, and gave instructions for the garden.
