Cimiez is the hill north-east of the centre, and the quiet residential quartier on it. A Celto-Ligurian tribe, the Vediantii, had an oppidum on its summit; in the first century the Roman town of Cemenelum grew at its foot and became the seat of the province of the Maritime Alps. Its three baths, its streets and its amphitheatre can still be walked, with the archaeological museum as the entrance.

The Franciscans founded the monastery of Cimiez in the sixteenth century; its church holds three works by the medieval painter Louis Bréa, and its gardens, with their rose beds, look out over the city to the sea. Beside the arena, the seventeenth-century Villa Gubernatis is now the Musée Matisse, and the olive grove in front of it is the Parc des Arènes.

At the end of the nineteenth century the hill filled with palaces and villas for Europe's sovereigns and aristocracy; Boulevard de Cimiez was opened in 1892 to reach them. The grandest, the Régina of 1896, received Queen Victoria.
