Musée Matisse
Matisse from first to last, in a seventeenth-century Genoese villa on Cimiez

The Musée Matisse holds one of the world's major collections of Henri Matisse's work, enough to follow him from his beginnings to his last pieces. It opened in 1963 in the Villa des Arènes on the hill of Cimiez – built from 1670 to 1685 as the Palais Gubernatis for a consul of Nice – and reopened in 1993 with a modern wing.
It stands in the olive grove of the Parc des Arènes, beside the Roman amphitheatre and a short walk from the Franciscan monastery, where Matisse is buried in the cemetery.
