Chapelle de la Miséricorde
The masterpiece of the Niçois baroque, on the Cours Saleya

The chapel of the Black Penitents is held to be the masterpiece of the Niçois baroque. It was built between 1747 and 1770 for the Theatines by the Turin architect Bernardo Antonio Vittone, on a plan drawn from Piedmontese baroque: a single elliptical nave ringed by elliptical side chapels, all curves, gilding and stucco, under a dome painted to look open to the sky.
It stands on the Cours Saleya, so the market comes up to its door.
