Le Port is the quartier of Port Lympia, the harbour dug from 1748 into a marshy valley at the foot of the old citadel, on the far side of the Castle Hill from the old town. The name comes from the Lympia spring that fed a small lake there; Charles-Emmanuel III of Sardinia ordered the port, and its building took more than a century and a half.

It is the principal harbour of Nice today, a basin of some twenty hectares framed by the Castle Hill on one side and Mont Boron on the other – and the western end of the three Corniches that run along the coast to Menton.
