The Musée d'Art moderne et d'Art contemporain opened on 21 June 1990 beside Place Garibaldi: a four-legged arch astride the covered Paillon, faced in white Carrara marble, by the architects Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal, joined to the theatre by a terrace called the Promenade des Arts.

Practical note: the museum closed in January 2024 for a major renovation; in 2025 its reopening was announced for 2029.
