The centre of Nice is built over a river. The Paillon, which once guarded the old town's landward side, was covered from 1868, and on its bed stand Place Masséna – laid out from the 1820s and 1830s on the model of Turin's Piazza Vittorio Veneto – and the Promenade du Paillon, the 1.2-kilometre green ribbon designed by the landscape architect Michel Péna and opened on 26 October 2013.

North from Place Masséna runs Avenue Jean-Médecin, the city's main shopping street, which the Niçois simply call «l'Avenue». Its lower end, by the square, is the more elegant; the upper end, towards the railway, the more everyday.
