The Opéra de Nice opened in 1885 on the site of an eighteenth-century theatre near the old Porte Saint-Éloi. It has two main façades – one on the seafront Quai des États-Unis, the other, with the entrance, on Rue Saint-François-de-Paule – and is home to the choir, the Nice-Méditerranée ballet and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nice.

It has been a classé historic monument since 31 March 1992.
